England team boss Fabio Capello today announced that Chelsea star John Terry would be the new England captain, despite the news that Rio Ferdinand was the hot favourite for the role.
John Terry beat his fellow England defender Rio Ferdinand to the post and seemed to be a little suprised about the appointment himself. Man Utd defender Ferdinand has been given the role of vice captain which would not seem unfair, but of course the big loser must be Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool captain was one of the favourites to become captain last time around, losing out to Terry that time. Now the midfielder will have to sit behind the two defenders in the pecking order.

There is little else to say really, the English Premier League kicks off tomorrow and that long wait is over.
It’ll be interesting to see how some of the new signings get on in their first games for their new clubs and even some of the new managers. The promoted teams will be praying for a winning start in their opening games whilst the usual favourites will be hoping not to slip up on the first day of the season.

If you thought that the Olympic Football Tournament doesn’t mean anything to football fans (and players for that matter) then you’re probably British like me!
Great Britain doesn’t have an Olympic football team, many believing the reason for this is that FIFA have mooted the possibility that if there was a GB team there would be no need for the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland squads. Remember what happened when the Berlin Wall came down, East and West Germany had their teams merged.
On the first day of Olympic football, in Beijing, some familiar names appeared on the score sheet:
Ronaldinho scored two for Brazil as they hammered New Zealand 5-0 in Group C
Ryan Babel was on the score sheet for Holland in their Group B game against the USA (2-2)
Salomon Kalou of Chelsea scored for Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in a 4-2 Group A win against Serbia
Victor Anichebe the young Everton striker, scored for Nigeria in their 2-1 win over Japan
Poor old China, the tournament hosts, had a torrid time in their Group C defeat to Belgium. Not only did they lose the game 2-0 but they also had two players sent off, Wangsong Tan and Zheng Zhi both seeing the red card.

What a long summer it’s been! Thankfully this weekend has seen the start of the 2008/2009 football season here in the UK with all but the Premier League kicking off over the weekend.
Later today will see the FA Community Shield between Man Utd and Portsmouth, the traditional opener to the top flight English football season, whilst in Scotland the SPL has already begun as well as the lower leagues of the English game. The Olympic Games have their own football tournament too, so it would seem that our wait is now over! FOOTBALL IS BACK
We’d like to say thankyou to our regular visitors and those of you who visited us during the summer break. At the time of writing this we have had over 5,700 visitors from the UK alone since we installed the Flag Counter (seen in the right hand menu), all of this being out of the seasons window. The hope now is that we can continue to grow in numbers as the new season progresses, so thanks again.

Today sees the first game of the new season in the Blue Square Premier, with Oxford United visiting Barrow for the season opener.
As we lose track of the time it’s a sudden realisation that the first game of the season is now upon us and there is little time left before the season gets in to full swing. Just take a look at the Scores page to see how many other leagues have already started.
It’s good to see the Blue Square Premier has started, being from Crawley it’ll be good to see how the Crawley Town Football Club (CTFC) team do this year after the problem filled last few seasons. Barrow and Oxford United will start the season, who knows where it will end?
