Manchester City came from behind with two late goals to beat Bournemouth and give Enzo Maresca a winning start to his first Premier League game in charge. The result also ended Marco Rose’s hopes of beginning his Bournemouth reign with victory.
Bournemouth took control in the first half when Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring. The midfielder was given plenty of space and made the most of it, firing home after Evanilson delivered an incisive low ball across the penalty area.
City struggled to find a response for much of the afternoon, with Erling Haaland missing several opportunities. The forward, who is usually prolific in August, was unable to convert his chances as Bournemouth appeared on course for an important result.
However, City finally found an equaliser with just six minutes remaining. Marc Guehi, operating in defensive midfield for only the third time in his career, rose to head Rayan Cherki’s corner into the net.
The comeback was completed in injury time when Josko Gvardiol guided a shot into the bottom corner. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a video assistant referee review overturned the decision and awarded City the winner.
The defeat brought Bournemouth’s impressive run to an end. They had gone 18 matches unbeaten in all competitions, a club-record sequence that had stretched back to January.
City’s late turnaround therefore secured victory, while Bournemouth were left to reflect on a match in which they had held the lead until the closing stages.
